Classical Chinese refers to the written language of the classical period of Chinese literature, from the end of the Spring and Autumn Period (early 5th century BC) to the end of the Han Dynasty (220 AD), while Literary Chinese is the form of written Chinese used from the end of the Han Dynasty to the early 20th century, when it was gradually replaced by vernacular written Chinese. Since the early 1900s there had been grassroots and government efforts to standardize an official speaking Chinese, develop the Zhu Yin system to simplify the learning of Chinese characters, and synchronize the mostly vernacular spoken Chinese and the literary written Chinese. On January 12, 1920, the Republic of China government officially replaced the literary-based textbooks with vernacular-based ones in primary education. This is a landmark change in Chinese language education. It sped up the spread of modern Chinese, shortened the difference between spoken and written Chinese, and helped to increase the literacy rate of Chinese population. Classical and literary forms of written Chinese, as an important property of Chinese culture and history, are still part of Chinese language education but not as the primary means of learning.

Wang’s family moved to Taiwan from Fujian, China in the mid 1800’s. His family made a living by growing tea plants, life was not easy. When he was 15 years old, Wang started working in a rice shop.
